Herbs, shrubs or small trees with viscid-pubescent parts; simple or glandular pubescence. Leaves petiolate or sessile, entire or subentire. Inflorescences paniculate, racemose, corymbs or flowers solitary; peduncle mostly erect, bracts mostly present. Flowers sometimes showy, mostly fragrant, actinomorphic, bisexual, 4-5-merous, pedicellate. Calyx regular or irregular, tubular or tubular-campanulate, 5-lobed. Corolla tubular, funnelform or salverform; limb 5-lobed; tube lobed to subentire. Stamens included, inserted at middle of corolla tube; filaments slender; anthers dehiscing longitudinally. Disc ring-like, nectariferous. Ovary 2-locular; style simple; stigma 2-lobed or capitate. Fruiting calyx persistent, slightly inflated, partially or completely enveloping fruit. Fruit a dry capsule dehiscing by apical valves. Seeds numerous, minute.

Annual, erect herb, up to 1 m tall, branched, viscid-pubescent. Leaves radical and cauline, 9-28 cm x 3.5-10 cm. Basal leaves obovate or oblanceolate, the lower and middle cauline leaves round-ovate, sessile, margin undulate, apex abruptly acuminate, usually twisted, the base clasping to clasping-auriculate; the upper cauline leaves reduced, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, margin strongly undulate, auriculate. Inflorescence a panicle, up to 15 cm long, lax; pedicels up to 1 cm long, glandular-pubescent. Flowers up to 4.5 cm long, actinomorphic, bisexual, 5-merous, hypogynous, white. Calyx 8-12 mm long, 10-ribbed, glandular-pubescent; lobes 5, unequal, 4-8 mm long, linear-lanceolate or linear-subulate. Corolla up to 4.5 cm long, salverform; the tube pale-green or purplish, long and slender, 3.5-4.5 cm x 1.5-2 mm, ampliated above to 3-4 mm wide, glandular-pubescent; limb ca. 10 mm across, lavender, pink or white, deeply 5- lobed, lobes ovate, acute. Stamens 5, unequal, attached just below the mouth of corolla tube; anthers shorter than the filaments, +/- oblong; filaments ca. 2 cm long, glabrous. Ovary ca. 2.5 mm long, 2-locular; style simple; stigma capitate, 2-lobed. Capsule 8-11 mm long, narrowly ovoid, nearly equal to calyx length, +/- included in persistent calyx, capsule dehiscing by apical valves. Seeds less than 1 mm long, subglobose to angular, minutely rugose-reticulate, brown.
